Stem cell breast augmentation is one of the newer options marketed to women who want fuller breasts without traditional implants. Many women who are unhappy with the size of their chest consider surgery, only to be put off by the high costs and health risks of standard breast augmentation. Others simply dislike the idea of having an unnatural substance implanted into their body.

For an effective procedure, harvesting the stem cells should be a separate, distinct process from harvesting fat cells. Alternatively, your doctor may have their own supply of stem cells to incorporate into your harvested fat.

The point of using stem cells rather than plain fat is that stem cells are special. When your body needs to make a new type of cell—for skin, bone, blood, or fat—it relies on stem cells to know how to produce more. In theory, the more stem cells injected into the breast, the more fat cells they can help produce, maintaining your gains for longer.

Weighing the Trade-Offs

There are two main types of stem cells: embryonic stem cells, which some special interest groups consider controversial, and adult stem cells. Adult stem cells are used more often because they can be harvested from living individuals—frequently the very person receiving treatment. This reduces the chance of rejection and lowers physical side effects for the patient.
